Covington, "Hunts".

Awaiting Picture

Front view of the "Warrant".

The Amenities Committee Website Logo, which is a shield with three lions on a silver background, is taken from a small pendant or "warrant" found in a field near the village. It is about 2 inches high, and may originally have been worn around the neck on a chain or thong. It probably dates from the 12th/13th Century and is the arms of the Bayeux family, the Norman Lords of the Manor. The construction is brass, with a green enamel inlay, and was most likely a badge of rank for a local official - perhaps a gamekeeper or tax collector. Perhaps he just dropped it, perhaps it was broken and got thrown away (unlikely) - or is there a more sinister explanation (even less unlikley)?

The most interesting point to note is that it's a completely different colour to the recorded colours of the arms of the Bayeux family. The site logo uses the recorded colours (Silver and Purple), but we reserve the right to change them if we decide to go with the evidence...
